Traditional Aspects

Your chart · time-limitedSteady♄︎Classical Astrology

Traditional aspects describe connections that a moving planet is forming with or leaving from a natal planet. The variants compare conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition, then separate approaching from departing contacts and benefic from malefic influence. Read the connection type first, followed by direction and planetary character.

In detail

Traditional aspects are established through the whole-sign relationship between a transiting planet and a natal planet, using conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition as the principal configurations. A partile contact means the degrees meet exactly; applying means the moving planet is approaching that contact, while separating means it has passed it. Interpretation begins with the configuration's cooperative, tense, or confrontational character, then weighs whether the incoming planet is benefic or malefic, and finally compares the applying and separating phases. Dexter and sinister describe directional differences but do not replace those primary axes.

FAQ

Do traditional aspects affect everyone the same way?
No. An aspect must connect specific transiting and natal planets, and their topics determine where the effect lands. The configuration describes how they interact, while planetary character and natal context modify the result, so identify both planets before judging the outcome.
What is the difference between applying and separating aspects?
An applying aspect is moving toward exact contact, while a separating aspect has already passed it. They are phases of the same configuration, but one describes a developing matter and the other a matter moving into aftermath, so direction should be checked before timing a response.
Are trines and sextiles always good, and squares and oppositions always bad?
No. Trines and sextiles generally transmit influence more easily, while squares and oppositions introduce more friction or confrontation, but a benefic or malefic planet can substantially alter the result. Read the configuration together with the incoming planet and its direction of motion.
