Gochara
Gochara is a Vedic method that counts a transiting planet from the sign occupied by the natal Moon. Its readings vary by planet, counted position, and the traditionally favorable or difficult character of that position; the variants below are best read by identifying the planet first, then the count from the Moon and the life area attached to it.
In detail
Gochara is established by measuring a transiting planet against the sign occupied by the natal Moon and identifying its position within the twelve-sign count. Interpretation combines the planet's significations with the life topics assigned to that position, then weighs the result along supportive versus restrictive effects, constructive versus difficult outcomes, and the planet's relative strength. Variants are compared by planet and counted position, with the same planet across different positions providing the clearest contrast. Saturn counted eighth from the Moon is traditionally called Ashtama Shani and is treated as a particularly weighty form.

FAQ
- What is gochara in Vedic astrology?
- Gochara is the practice of counting a current planetary position from the sign occupied by the natal Moon. The result is not identical for everyone: first identify the planet, then its counted position, and finally judge the relevant life topics against the individual chart.
- How should I read a gochara result?
- Start with the planet, count its position from the natal Moon sign, and then read the life area assigned to that position. Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, and Ketu do not carry the same interpretive emphasis, and the same planet can produce a different result when its counted position changes.
